The Great Wall of China, also known the Wall of 10,000 Li, is an ancient gigantic defensive project. It is one of the largest construction projects ever completed. It winds its way westward over the vast territory of China from the bank of the Yalu River and ends at the foot of snow-covered Qilianshan and Tianshan mountains. The Great Wall was listed by UNESCO in 1987 as one of the world heritages.
The Ming Tombs are a group of mausoleums of 13 Ming Emperors. The underground burial chamber of Ming Emperor Wanli is open to the public since excavation in 1956. The Great Wall was originally built in 221 BC.The section of Juyongguan we are going to visit was built in the 15th century during the Ming Dynasty and repaired recently.
LT2 Forbidden City ? Tian'anmen Square ? Temple of Heaven
Time: 08:30-17:00, August 28, 30; Price: RMB 450
The magnificent Forbidden City is a vast complex of palaces and pavilions which were home to Emperors for more than 500 years. The Temple of Heaven is a masterpiece of Ming (15th century) architecture, where the Emperors performed annual sacrificial rituals for good harvest. Today, it remains as the most complete and best- preserved collection of ancient buildings in China. The Temple of Heaven is another masterpiece of Ming architecture.
Emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties used the temples to perform sacrificial ceremonies to worship of the heaven. The buildings within the Temple of Heaven are round, like Heaven (one can imagine the sky as a rounded dome), while the foundations and axes of the complex are square (or 2 dimensional which is flat), just like the earth (appears to be). The Temple of Heaven was added to the World Heritage List in 1998.
LT3 Hutong Tour ? Beihai Park ? Jingshan Park
Time: 08:30-17:00, August 27, 29; Price: RMB 350
We strongly recommend the Hutong Tour. It is a tour around the old city residential areas on an old style tricycle. It is the place where you can experience the local culture, traditions and the daily life. Beihai Park is an imperial garden seated at the northwest of the Forbidden City. Initially built in the 10th century, it is amongst the largest Chinese gardens, and contains numerous historically important structures, palaces and temples.
Opposite the northern gate of the Palace Museum is Jingshan Park. Covering a space of 23 hectares, this park was once an imperial garden during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1911). Jingshan Park is found on Jingshan Hill. The mid summit of Jingshan is the highest point in Beijing. Looking from the peak, the visitor is able to get a full and clear view of the Forbidden City. During the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) numerous fruit trees were planted as well as many palaces and pavilions built for the emperor to make sacrifices to his ancestors. The park was fully reconstructed since 1949, with paths paved and buildings renovated. Now, the Jingshan Park is one of the 'AAAA' Scenery Spots in China and a 'must' for visitors to Beijing.
LT4 Lama Temple ? Confucian Temple in Beijing ? Summer Palace
Time: 08:30-17:00, August 28, 30; Price: RMB 400
The Lama Temple is the center of learning for the Yellow Hat sect of Tibetan Lamas with considerable religious and political sway. Today there are about 70 Mongolian lamas tending the temple. The dimensions of the temple are magnificent, which have five courtyards in a row. The front structural layout in the temple is bright and spacious dotted with screen walls with carved murals, lifeless things and decorated archways. The interior pavement leading to the main halls and the evergreen pine and cypress appear to be rather peaceful and secluded in the environment. The back structural layout is composed of a cluster of building, halls and pavilions intermingled with each other, and upturned eaves and ridges beautifully interwoven presenting a picturesque sight.
The Summer Palace, located in northwest suburban area of Beijing, is the largest and most complete imperial garden existing in China. It occupies an area of 304 hectares and features hill and water scenery. The Kunming Lake occupies four-fifths of this royal park. The Long Corridor running east-west along the lake as well as the Pavilion of the Fragrance of Buddha, the Sea of Wisdom, and the Hall of Dispelling the Clouds and Suzhou Street standing south to north on the Longevity Hill are the major scenic spots.
